History Located just five miles north of the heart of San Antonio, Alamo Heights is a town rich with its own history. Alamo Heights gets its name from an estate owned by G. W. Brackenridge, one of the area’s two earliest settlers who arrived in the area in the mid-1800s. Charles Anderson, the other early settler, developed his homestead on land that had been part of San Antonio and called it Sweet Homestead. By the 1890s, Anderson’s estate was sold to the Chamberlain Company of Denver. The Denver company soon planned a suburban residential development, dividing the land into parcels for home sites. Their developmental design stipulated that the platting follow the contour of the natural landscape and preserve the centuries-old trees. However, the development was ahead of its time and access to the area was limited to dusty roads suitable only for carriages and river travel. By 1921 auto travel was available into the area, but too late for the Chamberlain Company. Even though the company suffered financially in its endeavor, its impact on the community still remains. Alamo Heights became a municipality in 1922 with about 3,000 people. Five years later it became the only municipality in the county with all paved streets. Its sewer system was connected to the San Antonio system. The city, though surrounded by San Antonio, continues to preserve its unique character and charm.
